Fika Cafe In Kensington Market, Toronto

fika x6

Fika is just one of the cute little cafes I ended up visiting while in Toronto way back in 2016. I loved so much that I had to share. I originally found the Fika Cafe in Kensington Market on a Buzzfeed article. Then, I visited in 2016, and now I try to go back anytime I’m in Toronto. It’s in a great location, right in the heart of Kensington Market! You can head there for breakfast and then explore the market or vice versa. Kensington Market just keeps expanding, and expanding each time I go. Luckily, there’s always somewhere new to explore. If you’re visiting Toronto for the first time, Fika Cafe in Kensington Market is a must!

menu

Seems to be exactly the type of place you’d expect in Kensington Market- locally sourced, earthy type menu items. I got a kind of healthy breakfast sandwich that had egg, pesto, sprouts and kale (I think?) in it and I was not about it at all, but my sister really liked it. They also had a breakfast granola/yogurt deal and I’m really kicking myself for not ordering it. Update edit: I have since tried it, it was delicious. Last time we were there my cousin got the almond butter avocado toast, I had a bite and I’ve been making it at home ever since.

drinks

They had both coffee and tea, classic types of coffee (latte, flat white, etc) and I believe some more exotic types of teas than your classic black and green. They also had iced teas which my sister got and it was yum. My favourite was my lemonade – SO GOOD. It came with a sprig of rosemary in it and it was so refreshing on such a hot day. The real reason I come to Fika is for the drinks. Specifically… for the lavender white hot chocolate. It’s incredible, just trust me on this. I’ve also had their elderflower + rosewater lemonade and it was other worldly. They always have a perfectly refreshing drink, whether it’s -20, or 20!

atmosphere & decor

This is SUCH A CUTE PLACE! On a hot day out I always opt to sit out on the patio under the cover of umbrellas. The seating area is a bit confusing, there are seats in the front of the shop but then it continues on to the back, but it’s not really clear and you don’t want to just walk into the back of a shop, ya know? It’s okay if you do though, there is seating back there, but it’s shared seating and there’s not always a lot of space! In the back is where you’ll find the ‘book wall’ that’s pictured. The one drawback to the ambiance is that the people working sometimes don’t always come off very friendly but hey ho sometimes we all have an off-day, don’t we?

price

It wasn’t incredibly cheap but it wasn’t incredibly expensive. The portions of the food were small for what you were paying and the drinks were delicious but again, slightly overpriced for what they were. That being said, now that I live in Edinburgh where everything in the world is expensive, I will gladly fork over the cash for the quality.

available seating

Despite being featured on a Buzzfeed article, and being a smaller place there was still more than enough seating when I first went – but it was just after it opened at 10am. I’ve had to sit at the shared tables in the back, which was fine by me but sometimes Canadians aren’t used to sharing tables and… aren’t the friendliest. Unexpected, I know.  Keep in mind that the available seating is halved in the wintertime because of the chilly outdoors.

All in all: I do love to have a healthy breakfast to start off my day, and Fika Cafe in Kensington Market is such a nice place to be on a bright and sunny day. I also really love checking out places that I’ve heard about online and seeing and judging for myself. I’ll always keep going back to Fika, if only for the lavender white hot chocolate.
