MAC Prep, Prime + Fix Review

p coverThis review is the last in a set of MAC’s favourite face products reviews where I looked at MAC’s Face + Body Foundation, and MAC’s Select Cover Up. Face products’ performance always comes down to what primer you’re using, which makes it one of the most important products in your makeup bag! People love MAC’s Prep, Prime + Fix Primer because it can prep your face and make makeup last longer, and it can be sprayed onto individual brushes to make face + eyeshadow colours appear more pigmented. Multi-faceted products like this are my favvvv because you get 2 for 1 cost, and they’re great for when you’re travelling! YES. Here is my MAC Prep Prime + Fix Review.

What Is Primer?

Primer is the product  you put on your face + neck + anywhere else you’re putting makeup to ‘prime’ the skin for makeup. It works to a number of effects – it makes the makeup go on better, it makes it last longer, and it creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup.

Product Performance

As a stand alone primer it’s my second favourite primer, right behind Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. Let’s break it down:

Does it help your makeup last all day?

It’s not the best, but my makeup last significantly longer when I’ve used it then when I haven’t. If available, I’ll always choose to use it over nothing.

Does the product go on nicely?

As it’s a spray, it goes on fairly evenly. There’s a tiny bit of technique when it comes to spraying, but it’s easy enough to do right.

Does it create a barrier + base between skin/makeup?

5It’s a water based primer, once sprayed, you have to wait for it to dry. Once it’s dry, it’s hard to tell there was much there to begin with. It’s not creating any barrier. What it is doing is enhancing the makeup products you use. This is why a lot of users simply spray it right onto their brushes.

Cost + Purchasing

MAC’s Prep + Prime + Fix is $28.00 CAD for 100ml from MAC at Hudson’s Bay. That’s a pretty consistent mid-range price for a primer. Still, a lot of makeup enthusiasts buy this product only because it makes eyeshadows more pigmented. So, you can use it as a primer, and as a finishing spray as well.

Animal Testing + Ethics

Unfortunately, MAC is a brand that is sold in China, and products in China are required by law to test on animals. MAC is not a cruelty free brand. Huge deal-breaker for me, I didn’t realise this when I did my last shopping binge at MAC.

The Verdict

MAC Prep Prime Fix Review verdict is in…  I would argue this product is worth the money because of its versatility. If I’m trying a new primer, I still use this product every day to either enhance my blush, or to set my face. It’s a hard product to replace, because you would have to buy three different products to do what it does. It’s probably just cheaper to stick to what you’ve got. If anyone knows of any cruelty free products that work like this, let me know! Until then: let’s keep pushing China to change this archaic law, science has come a long way, let’s start acting like it.

Have you tried mixing/layering primers? It might help some with the lack of barrier, and I’ve really enjoyed doing this lately.

Yeah I’ve been using it with Maybelline’s illuminating primer! Sometimes it’s too much for my face though and I end up feeling like my face is super oily all day long 🙄😩

Loved this review. I work at MAC and thought I’d share a little tip ☺️ Try using fix+ then moisturise, then prime and do your make-up as usual and then spray at the end. Fix+ I’d say is more of a hydrating spray than a primer, although it does contain glycerin to help your makeup stick. I hope this helps. Have you tried fix+ with MAC pigments? It’s so good 😍

I reaaaaally want to try the pigments but I can never pick a colour 😂😩 I’ll have to try that order! I’ve been playing around with primers + moisterizers for awhile and either it goes alright or I end up with a super greasy feeling face 🤦🏼‍♀️ Hopefully this order will do the trick!!

If you have oily skin always but a primer to help control it. Natural radiance P&P is good because it controls the oil but still hydrates. Hope you find your perfect products ❤️

I think I must be going through some skin changes because I’ve always had dry skin, but it’s definitely gotten a lot more oily lately! Thanks for all your advice 🙂

I love MAC’s Fix + and use it to brighten my shimmery shadows. Have you tried any of Smashbox’s primers? I use the hydrating face primer and it offers me a great deal of moisture without feeling oily or greasy!

Smashbox is my favourite, it works sooooo well but it was the first one I tried so I wanted to shop around a little bit once it ran out ☺️

I’ve always wanted to try this although many people say it’s only good for enhancing eyeshadow pigment. I would still purchase it just for that though! Great post! I would really appreciate it if you could check out my very first post on my new blog!😊🌸
