How to Hack the Nude (Lipstick)

I only really got into the nude lipstick fad in the last year, and can I just say? Total game-changer. I never really liked them on other people (mostly thinking of YouTubers who always point out their lipstick) because I didn’t think it really added anything to the look. I was the type of person that wore lipstick mostly as a statement, and used one or two pink colours for everyday wear. My favourite thing about nude lipsticks NOW is that it doesn’t make an obvious statement or add a ton to the look. Instead… it just ~works~ no matter what’s going on with the rest of my face. Lipstick seriously helps frame your face, and 9 times out of 10 I’m wearing really minimal, natural makeup intended to do just that – highlight my features and frame my face. Back in the old days, I used t just put on a lip balm that would be gone in a matter of minute. Now, I addd a nude lip and it raises the look up a few notches, giving the look a more professional and put together tone.
When it comes to nude lipsticks I have some MAJOR favs and some I use just to mix it up. I have different shades to go with different outfits and different ~vibes~. Here are my top five favourites, and what I like to wear them with.

Sephora Cream Lip Stain – I received this as a part of a PR package that I got when I went to the Sephora store opening in Thunder Bay, so I reeeeally didn’t expect much from it. In reality, it’s the lipstick that turned me on to the nude look! It’s a matte liquid lipstick, but it doesn’t cake on your lips, and it feels really light. It’s long wearing, and it’s colour doesn’t get patchy or fade. It’s become my go-to lip colour for a basic, neutral makeup look. Or…. if I want to add a lip colour without really thinking about it, aka no matter what the rest of my makeup is, I just add this on and call it a day!
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink in ‘Seductress – This is the PERFECT pink nude. I received this in a PR package from Maybelline, along with about 12 other lip colours, and this one is easily my favourite. It’s my second go-to for any day, no matter the makeup. It’s long-lasting, matte but not drying, and easy to reapply (without getting grimy or caked!). The Maybelline liquid lipstick is probably my favourite formula out of the bunch. The colour is a neutral pink, and what I grab when I want a bit more colour. I wore it pretty much every day I was in Cuba without any stress about what my lips looked like after I put it on.
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink in ‘Amazonian’ – This is from the same bunch of Maybelline lipsticks that I received, but it’s slightly less worn. This nude has more of a brick red tone to it, which I instantly became obsessed with. I use this as a bit more of a statement neutral lip (contradictory, I know). Basically: when I want a look that looks earthy and laidback, but still looks like I’m wearing makeup, I grab this.
Kylie Cosmetics, KoKo Collection in ‘Khlo$ – I’ve had this lipstick the longest and it was the very first nude lip that I wore regularly. It’s the perfect mix between an orange and a pink tone. It’s very much a nude colour, but it doesn’t wash out my skin like I find nude lipsticks usually do. When I was studying for exams, this was my go-to lipstick for long days in and out of the library. It’s long wearing (but kind of cakey, and hard to reapply), and has great and even colour coverage!
Bite ‘Date’ – The only ‘real’ lipstick on this list, and the one I’ve owned the longest. I always bring this lipstick when I travel, partially because it’s 2 in 1, partially because it has a nude and a pink (and what more could a person need?), and partially because the formula is GREAT and very moisturizing. It’s not long lasting, but it’s super easy to reapply, and as you can see, I’ve shown it a lot of love over the years. This is one that I put on when I want a little warmth brought back to my face. I favourite it in the winter, and any time I’m travelling.

  1. Maybelline definitely has some amazing nude lipsticks!! I’ve never been that into nude lipstick/neutrals, but I’ve been recently loving them as well! They just work for every occasion xx I like subtle pinks most!
