A weekend away in Gothenburg

It’s so easy to get to Gothenburg for a weekend, and it’s a great city to visit if you want to see Sweden on a tighter budget! I’ve visited twice now, and I’ll definitely be back again. It’s one of my favourite cities to visit, year round. Here’s your guide to Gothenburg for a weekend getaway:

Flights to Gothenburg

Ryanair does a ton of cheap flights between Gothenburg and Dublin, Edinburgh, Milan, and a number of other European cities. From where I live in Edinburgh, I’ve gotten flights for as little as £17 return for a weekend trip! Many people I know have never gone because they think Sweden is super expensive. I’d say Gothenburg is to Stockholm what Edinburgh is to London in terms of prices. I certainly didn’t find it anymore expensive than it would have been to travel within the U.K.

A few weekends ago, I flew out on a Wednesday evening and back on a Monday evening. It was just a long weekend – but it felt like a proper break from work!

Where to stay in Gothenburg

It can be quite expensive to stay in the most central part of the city where most hotels are. Definitely have a look on Booking.com and see if you can get any deals if you prefer staying in hotels. However, my favourite part of the city is on the other side of the big park called Slottskogen. I’ve rented Airbnbs in areas like Masthugget and Majorna, and absolutely adore it. It’s only a 20-30 minute walk in the morning through Slottskogen to the city centre, and you can easily get the tram in a matter of minutes. The neighbourhoods are so stunning and cosy, and I definitely feel like you get more of the “Swedish” experience to speak staying in these areas, and it’s usually a lot cheaper. If you’re staying for a longer weekend, you can even split your time between the city and the archipelago.

On my last trip I stayed in this Airbnb in Majorna. We walked into the city via Slottskogen every morning, and got the tram to Majvallen every evening. On Friday we even popped back to the Airbnb mid-day for a break, and it didn’t feel like a long trek to do so.

The Gothenburg archipelago

You can get to the archipelago via tram and boat in less than an hour from the city centre. It costs just a few pounds to ride public transport for an hour and a half, and that includes both the tram and the boat so it’s quite affordable. The Gothenburg archipelago will get it’s own blog entirely, and I recommend checking it out if you’re in the city for more than a few days!

What to do in Gothenburg

Years ago after my first visit I wrote 10 Things To Do In Gothenburg, Sweden – it still stands. My absolute favourites from the list include visiting Slottskogen and the cafes and petting zoo inside of it, and going to Haga for fika. You can also easily visit the archipelago even just for the day. Getting to the island Brännö is quite a quick trip. The island reflects much of the rest of the archipelago; around 800 people live there year round, there’s a wee cafe and restaurant, and a number of nature walks. It has a large nature reserve as well, which leads to a bridge to the neighbouring island of Galterö, an island that is entirely a nature reserve.

Any questions? Leave them in the comments below! I’ll definitely be back to Gothenburg for a weekend soon. I think I’ll even plan a bit of a longer trip next time and get the train to Stockholm, or somewhere else in Sweden so I can see a bit more of the country.

A weekend in Melrose

After nearly four years of living in Edinburgh, it came to my attention that I still had never been to the Scottish Borders. This is excused partially by the pandemic, and partially by the fact I don’t have a car. Awhile ago, Angus brought up the idea of going on the Borders railway when things opened back up. It’s only around 1 hour from Edinburgh to Tweedbank – the end of the railway line. A very achievable trip we thought.

Initially we planned to go to Galashiels (the stop before Tweedbank), or Melrose (a short walk from Tweedbank) for a day. When I posted on my Instagram asking for recommendations, a friend got in touch and offered to have us stay in her newly renovated flat in Melrose before it went up on Airbnb. So, off we went for a weekend in Melrose!

A Weekend In Callander

I live in Edinburgh, but I was born and raised in the middle of nowhere, Canada. So I like to get away from the city for the weekend when I can. Sometimes it’s just for a day in the Pentland Hills, other times it’s a weekend away on the Isle of Skye (it’s doable!). This time, it was a weekend in Callander. I picked Callander while on my way back from Skye, actually. Annoyed and jaded by all the tourists I saw on Skye, I wanted somewhere quiet, often skipped over by tourists. Just outside the tourist hub of Fort William* and still incredibly cute and cosy, Callander was the perfect fit.

*By normal standards Callander and Fort William aren’t too far apart. This is not the case by Scottish standards… where Glasgow and Edinburgh are on other sides of the planet

A weekend visiting Paris in the Rain

Le Marais, Paris

Last weekend we (Angus and I) were in Paris on a long weekend holiday to visit my cousin Claudia who’s studying there. I know that there are about a million and one travel guides for Paris, this is not one of them. If I’m honest, I did very little prep for this holiday. Since my cousin has been living there for months, I figured she’d know her way around and we’re already familiar with all the typical tourist destinations. So, in lieu of writing yet another travel guide, I’m telling you very simply what we did. Or at least I’m giving you the highlights. It was a miraculous weekend, and I think no travel guide can really tell you how to have one of those. This, is Paris in the rain.

A Weekend Away In Skye

A woman sitting in a grassy field at Brothers Point, Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is a hotspot tourist destination, I knew that before I went. Loads of tourists on my tours had headed up there, and each and every one said that it was the highlight of their holiday. When I finally went with my family over the summer, I was so excited to see what it was all about! There are a million and one Isle of Skye destination guides: this is one for the weekend traveller. Here’s my advice for a weekend in Skye.

A Weekend In St Andrews

I know that St Andrews was on my list of Day Trips From Edinburgh, and I maintain that it’s a lovely place for a day trip! That said, I love St Andrews a lot. There’s a ton of cute walks, cafes, restaurants, and loads of things to see and do! So, I think if you have the time it’s well worth a whole weekend in St Andrews. The added bonus is that it’s not too far from Edinburgh so you really cut down on the travel time! Pretty much the opposite of a weekend away in Shetland. If you’re visiting Scotland from abroad, it’s definitely a weekend trip to consider because it’s so easy to get to and there’s still a lot of sightseeing opportunities!

A Weekend In Shetland

Most people would think it is insane to spend only a weekend in Shetland as it’s so remote. But, if you’re based in a major city in Scotland and you’ve always wanted to go, it’s completely reasonable to spend a weekend in Shetland! That being said, Shetland often seems like the sort of place people only go if they really want to, but it’s a lovely and unique place to visit even if you haven’t heard of it before. Shetland is where Nordic and Celtic traditions really come to a head. It’s the northernmost point in Scotland, and an incredibly beautiful, relaxing, and cozy place to be!
